Godzilla (1998)

Hey Folks, here is the first of the reviews from Rolland Emmerich night, I have chosen Godzilla, because I feel like I have a decent amount to say on this film, and my notes for ID4 are incomplete due to a keyboard malfunction.

The Suggested Reading: should I even keep this section? I never seem to recommend a reading anymore to go along with the movie.

The Synopsis: The French detonate some nuclear weapons in the south pacific. GINO ensues. Read the rest of this page »

The Dunwich Horror (1970)

Hey Folks, so it would appear every time I say “this is the time I am really going to start giving an honest go at 100 Nights again” I never do. I would like to get on a semi-regular posting regimen again, so we will see how that goes.  Tonight I am excited about since it is Roland Emmerich night, three classics that he either directed or produced.

The Suggested Reading: What else can i pick here besides The Dunwich Horror by Mr. H. P. Lovecraft

The Synopsis: A guy tries to summon one of the elder gods. Stockholm syndrome ensues. Also some squamous things ensue too. Read the rest of this page »

Troll 2

ImageHey Folks,

Well holy damn, look at that, I am writing a review. The first one since I believe October. So many bad movies so little time. So today I am bringing to you a film that has been called “The Worst Film Ever Made”. In fact there is a whole documentary called Best Worst Movie based entirely on how bad this film is. Now having said that, this is not the worst film I have ever seen. That honor is still held by Asylum of Terror though it is probably worth mentioning that Vampires vs Zombies (another misnamed movie) is second. I might fit this in somewhere in the top 5, definitely top 10.

The Suggested Reading: Anything to clear the memory of this film

The Synopsis: A family is lured to the town of Nilbog for a relaxing vacation in the countryside. Absolutely no trolls ensue.  Read the rest of this page »

Pumpkinhead

Hey folks, look at me being a good blogger (sort of). it is almost Halloween and what better time of year than now for horror films? Stan Winston is known for his amazing creature effects including such films as ConstantineThe Thing, Tank Girl, and Monster Squad. Also films which I have not yet reviewed like Aliens, Terminator, Predator, The Relic, Congo, Wrong Turn and Leviathan. Also for the creature concepts in the game ‘The Suffering’. Plus did some creature concepts and alien design for Pocahontas in Space, or if you would like Fern Gully in Space. In 1988 he decided to take a hand at directing a film and the result was Lance Henriksen taking revenge on a bunch of teens, with a Stan Winston creature creation of course.

The Suggested Reading: Pumpkinhead by Ed Justin

Keep away from Pumpkinhead,
Unless you’re tired of living,
His enemies are mostly dead,
He’s mean and unforgiving,
Laugh at him and you’re undone,
But in some dreadful fashion,
Vengeance, he considers fun,
And plans it with a passion,
Time will not erase or blot,
A plot that he has brewing,
It’s when you think that he’s forgot,
He’ll conjure your undoing,
Bolted doors and windows barred,
Guard dogs prowling in the yard,
Won’t protect you in your bed,
Nothing will, from Pumpkinhead.

The Synopsis: Some teens inadvertently kill the son of a shopkeeper, he in turn summons a spirit of vengeance. 80′s horror and creature effects ensue.

The Stuff

Hey Folks, I am really trying to do two a week, so here is my second. This movie came up on the queue because of a friend of mine describing it as one of her favorite B movies. From someone who seemed well versed in the genre to claim it as one of her favorites certainly carried some weight. This was a while ago now, but the desire to see this film has not changed. Also while searching for the movie poster The Stuff of Thought, by Pinker showed up, which ought to be quite amusing to a segment of my readership.

The Suggested Reading: Babycakes by Neil Gaiman

The Synopsis: A guy finds some goop in a mine shaft, and is compelled to eat it. Evil marshmallow fluff ensues.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

Hey Folks, I bet some of you were starting to  wonder if I had just fallen off the face of the planet. It has kind of been a blur all year, my coffee addiction aside. Been looking at graduate programs which has been interesting, and very cool news I am an uncle now. I can’t imagine you came here to read about my personal life, so let’s get to the review. This is a gem that I picked up at the library one day just wanting the usual slasher fare. I had no prior knowledge of the film before that day, but it has since become a favorite. When we were selecting movies last night on netflix I saw it scroll by and I there was really no other choice after that. Bear with me, I did not take any formal notes on this one, but I really want to review it.

The Suggested Reading:–

The Synopsis: A up and coming slasher killer allows a grad student to film his preparation and methods. Hilarity and murder ensues.

C.H.U.D.

Hey Folks,

I am having some technical issues, but fear not my loyal readers, I move boldly onward! My lovely 22″ Wide-aspect monitor is currently being replaced by a 13″ 4:3. Equally sad is that I will not get paid again for the better part of two weeks so I will suffer with.

Anyways in more relevant news this is my third review since restarting which I think is a good start again. I’ve been getting an idea for some short fiction. The only issue is that it is not in a genre I am used to writing in, so that might make it more challenging and not have it be really stale feeling.

The movie I was hoping to review was Dracula II: Ascension, but I cannot find my notes on it. I am hoping that we did not watch it the same week that we watched Black Belt Jones (though we might have). Don’t worry Black Belt Jones will get watched again and reviewed. It had some amazing fight scenes in it. The scoring was also amazing.

Instead I bring you C.H.U.D.

The Synopsis: Homeless people are vanishing from the streets. Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers ensue. Read the rest of this page »

Dracula 2000

Hey folks, remember back around 2000 when adding 2000 to a movie title seemed like a good idea. I was a little surprised how few actually did it, compared to what I thought I remembered from just over a decade ago. Dracula 2000, Fantasia 2000, Godzilla 2000, and Pokemon the Movie 2000 are the only ones I am immediately finding from the year 2000. There was also Death Race 2000, Cherry 2000, and Blues Brothers 2000. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn there are some really low budget films out there that also have the 2000 tag on them, but 10 min on wikipedia and IMDb is all the more research you are getting on this bit of information.Okay so TvTropes has a much more extensive list of the 2000 tag phenomenon.

Dracula 2000 went on to spawn two sequels and one movie that sounds like it should be in continuity but in fact has nothing to do with Dracula 2000. The sequels are as follows: Dracula II: Ascension and Dracula III: Legacy. Dracula 3000 (the Dracula in space movie) was done by an entirely different production company. This is not to say Dracula II: Ascension plays around with the continuity of Dracula 2000 for its plot hook, but at the minimum it was intended as a continuation of the original movie.

This marks the first time I have done 2 reviews in a week since last week of March. It feels good and familiar to be back doing this. I think I need to remember there were a lot of personal reasons for engaging in movie reviews more than recognition for doing so. I have a handful of loyal readers and periodically StumbleUpon brings in a ton of traffic, and that should suffice.

So let’s get to it.

The Suggested Reading: Count Dracula, Woody Allen (go find this one it is hysterical)

The Synopsis: A bunch of thieves accidentally steal Dracula’s coffin. Vampires and 2000′s Rock Music ensue. Read the rest of this page »

Black Death

Hey Folks,

I realize things stalled again after Hobo with a Shotgun. It is my intent to get back on a routine with this and get back to writing. It was really helpful for keeping up my writing chops until I feel like writing some fiction again. Also I think it really helped crystallize my voice as a critic. [[Afternote: I notice that I am a little out of practice. S0 bear with while I find my style again. It is a little rough around the edges.]]

I wanted to review a film called Black Belt Jones today, but then I realized I did not take notes on it. So I will rewatch it take the notes and review it in the future.

Todays film I was expecting to be a historical supernatural horror film, which would have been perfect for 100 Nights. In the beginning of the film we see Sean Bean and co. talking about how they are going to find this village because there is  a demon-summoning necromancer there. Which I think has the potential for being an awesome film also. This was something different instead. It was about very human very grounded things. PERFECT might not be spot on to review this with but I will modify it where I need to.

The Synopsis: Sean Bean and his merry band of inquisitors go searching for a Necromancer in a plague free town. Duplicity ensues

Hobo with a Shotgun

Hey folks, long time I know. School was just leaving me without much free time, and quite sadly 100 Nights suffered for it. Having said that I graduate tomorrow. Like degree in hand I am done graduating! Long time coming I know. So if you follow me on twitter I have been alluding to a “secret goal” well folks, this is it, the rebirth of 100 Nights! I am sure of my more astute readers might have ventured this as their guess. So let me just say it is good to be back and with my new found not being in school I should have more time to devote to the website. The thing then became what do I return with. I mean I can’t just choose your run of the mill terrible movie to be my first review back in over a month. So I choose one of the most recent ones watched at movie night (which also sadly didnt happen during April (due to my illness and some of the other members in our group having work related stuff). May marks the restart of Movie Night with Sara and Jeff (and occasionally Alex when he is not being lame, and Drew if he would ever show up).  May marks the restart of 100 Nights, so it is a good month so far.

The movie I chose to review today is ‘Hobo with a Shotgun’ which is a wonderfully literal title. A little history on this film, not that long ago I reviewed the movie Planet Terror (okay so like October), this was part of a double feature called Grindhouse. During this film there were fake movie trailers shown between the two features, one of which was Machete (which I am certain I will get to before too long) which was made into a real film. According to all my sources the trailer for Hobo with a Shotgun was only shown in Canadian markets, but I suppose it is possible they showed it elsewhere too. This marks the second of the “fake trailers” that have now been made into real films.  It is a basic premise: Hobo + Shotgun + People to Shoot with said Shotgun, but this film was a lot of fun and was that great mix of bad and entertaining that I decided made it worthy of my first review back.

So let’s get to it

The Suggested Reading: n/a

The Synopsis: A hobo dispenses some vigilante justice with a shotgun. Hilarity ensues, and so do multiple shotgun related fatalities.
